The Opportunity

Vernon Electric Cooperative (VEC) announces the recruitment for a well-qualified CEO to succeed our current CEO, who is retiring in February 2019. Are you looking for an opportunity to lead a strong, progressive electric cooperative? The electric industry is rapidly changing, and you can play an instrumental role in shaping the future for VEC.  You will lead strategic initiatives, promote team and relationship-building consistent with VEC shared values, be actively involved in governmental relations, ensure superior customer service, and be actively engaged in helping our community.

VEC serves 11,200 accounts and has annual revenues of $21 million. It is financially strong and has a very dedicated and stable workforce of 30 employees. The Cooperative has recently installed a new AMI system and completed a strategic plan, cost of service study, and long-range work plan. VEC is a leader in community solar and renewable energy.

Our Community and Nearby Areas

VEC is located in Westby, a town of approximately 2,200 residents in a beautifully scenic and largely agricultural area in southwestern Wisconsin. The community offers several excellent schools and healthcare facilities and provides a friendly, small-town atmosphere emphasizing its Norwegian roots. Outdoor activities abound with boating, world-class trout fishing, hunting, hiking, cross-country and downhill skiing, golfing, biking, and farmers’ markets. The City of La Crosse (55,000 pop.) is only 25 miles away and is home to Viterbo University, Western Technical College, and the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, one of the largest campuses of the University of Wisconsin System with 10,000 students and offering bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programs. Madison, the state capital (250,000 pop.), is 100 miles away and is home to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and offers comprehensive large-city amenities, services and recreational alternatives.

Position Requirements

The successful candidate will have a proven track record in leadership and innovation, possess a thorough knowledge of the electric cooperative industry, have excellent problem-solving skills, and be an influential strategic thinker. The CEO candidate must have:

  • 10 years of electric utility experience
  • 5 years of senior management experience; electric co-op experience is highly preferred
  • Proven leadership experience
  • Strong communications and presentation skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal and team-building skills
  • Experience in labor negotiations
  • Demonstrated commitment to community
  • Knowledge of renewable energy issues and technologies
  • Experience working with a board of directors and a diverse membership
  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field; MBA or MIP graduate is preferred
